If you are physically fit, I would rather recommend you to hike upto the temple.
Detailed Route: Palampur (Subash Chowk) -> 3kms (Bhundla) -> 5kms (Langha) -> 6kms Upper Langa -> 7 kms (Jakhni Temple).
You can also climb to Birni Devi right from the Jakhni Temple.
However, I would recommend you to climb Birni from Langha village instead. You can read about my trek to Birni Devi here & seriously, it is a must visit place if you are ever in Palampur.
From Jakhni Temple, you can admire the Dhauladhar Range right beside the temple and sweet smell of pines.
There are not too many shops by now except a small one to have a cup of Tea. Buses have their fixed timings & their frequency is not that much. So, one should not rely on buses as the only transport. It is better option to hire a maxicab instead, but their charges may be tricky for Jakhni Mata Temple.
